Tannus Quatre, PT, MBA, principal and consultant for Vantage Clinical Solutions, Inc., believes data mining is helping the practice of physical therapy. “With data mining you have a huge set of data points collected through EMR (Electronic Medical Records), a common way to collect data,” he says. “You have all this information, but cannot necessarily make sense of it until it is analyzed for trends that you otherwise may not be able to recognize.”
Quatre also suggests that data mining can be used to identify items that may best serve your practice. “The key to using this data successfully is to be able to weed out what’s irrelevant,” Quatre says. “The trick is to be able to identify the important trends early and to remove the distracting garbage information, thus affecting important clinical or business decisions.”
